“Surround yourself with people who make you happy. People who make you laugh, who help you when you’re in need. People who genuinely care. They are the ones worth keeping in your life. Everyone else is just passing through.” –Karl Marx
Today is our team planning day. And by team, I mean Jamie, Mike and Ashley. I don’t know why but for some reason I have a mental planning block. I will sit down with them but I just can’t wrap my mind around it. Maybe it’s my adult ADHD. I have trouble concentrating on a unit plan beyond the week. But not my team, I call them the “Brain Trust”(In a positive, non-sarcastic way), they are amazing planners. I have never met three people who were so organized and focused.
They have folders, notes, calendars and are planning machines. The Brain Trust (BT) have an uncanny way of remembering exactly what we did the previous year and producing the materials, probably because their filing system is not a green recycling bin.
For my part, I try to lighten the mood, throw them off task and generally cause chaos. However, the BT is usually unwavering in their planning pursuits. I will occasionally get a laugh, a smile or a rare tangent from Mike, but more often or not they ignore me. Here is a normal scenario.
Tom – “Hey! You guys see Kim Kardshian dyed her hair blond?”
BT- “So all next week will be chapter 5…blah, blah, blah,” Unfazed.
Tom- “Can we take a break? Anybody need a coffee?”
BT- “I really like the way the book organizes… I agree… I think we should… When we get to the 18th…”
Tom- “The 18th? What happened to the 11th-17th?
BT – Eye rolls all around.
Tom – “Want me to go make a pot of coffee?”
BT- a collective “Hurry back,” without even looking up.
